The department’s Dr. William T. Hold/The National Alliance Program in Risk Management and Insurance and Real Estate Program are each one of the oldest and largest programs in the nation, and both programs consistently secure top spots among the nation’s universities. Close interaction among students, faculty members, alumni and the business community continues to be a hallmark of our programs.
Courses in business law are also offered through the department to all business students. Advanced and specialized business law courses are available to students wanting a more comprehensive knowledge in fields such as accounting, finance, insurance and real estate.
The department works with the FSU Real Estate Center Executive Board, the Risk Management and Insurance Executive Council and the Florida Catastrophic Storm Risk Management’s Advisory Council to keep its curriculum relevant, provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and offer opportunities for students to network with industry executives.

Students are encouraged to enrich their education through the department’s real estate internships, risk management/insurance internships and real estate licensing and risk management/insurance licensing opportunities, as well as the college’s internship program and international programs. The “fast-tracking” of many training programs through the department provides students with a competitive advantage over other graduates. Networking and leadership opportunities are available through student organizations, such as Gamma Iota Sigma and the Real Estate Society and our numerous industry-specific events. Additionally, the college’s Student Leadership Council sponsors several networking events and student engagement programs to assist students in the transition from college to career. Generous scholarships help support students along the way.
Risk Management/Insurance, Real Estate and Legal Studies faculty members are widely recognized for their high-quality, ground-breaking research and several are acknowledged worldwide as experts in their fields. In addition to being active in a wide-spectrum of scholarly research, our faculty members maintain a reputation university-wide as being among the most well-respected teachers on campus, according to student evaluations and university commendations. Their research is enhanced through the department’s centers, the Florida Catastrophic Storm Risk Management Center, the Center for Risk Management Education and Research and the FSU Real Estate Center, as well as through events such as our FSU-UF Critical Issues Symposium and Working Paper Series.
