Dear Alumni and Friends,

Though spring commencement has come and gone, summer school is in full swing and the College of Business remains a beehive of activity. The “Dog Days” of summer arrived far too soon in Tallahassee, making us all long for the cooler temperatures and excitement that come during the fall semester.

We remain steadfast on our Path to Preeminence and continue to work diligently to ensure that our People, Programs, Place and Posture are aligned to ensure success.

You’ve heard me say before that preeminence is impossible without great people. Our college is very fortunate to have these outstanding faculty members joining us for the 2017-18 academic year:

  • Dr. David King (Strategic Management) is the new chair of the Management Department. He joins us this summer after a highly successful stint at Iowa State University.
  • Dr. Sami Keskek (Accounting) joins us from the University of Arkansas.
  • Dr. Tim Hurley (Accounting) joins us from Ithaca College.
  • Mr. Geoffrey Adams (Accounting) joins us from the FSU Controller’s Office.
  • Mr. Lance Kerwin (Business Analytics) joins us from Ernst & Young.
  • Mr. Chuck Viosca (Marketing) joins us from Nicholls State University.

We also have four faculty members joining us after recently completing their doctoral degrees at other universities:

  • Dr. Jordan Rippy (Accounting) – University of Alabama
  • Dr. Haoyang Liu (Finance) – University of California, Berkeley
  • Dr. Evan Eastman (Risk Management) – University of Georgia
  • Dr. Horacio Rousseau (Strategic Management) – University of Navarra, IESE (Spain)

I am pleased to announce that the University’s Board of Trustees recently approved our new Master of Science in Business Analytics program. We look forward to welcoming the first class of students in summer 2018. This is the first graduate degree in business analytics at a public university in Florida.

We also received initial approval to develop several joint degrees with the College of Law and their new Juris Masters (JM) program. We look forward to launching joint degrees in business administration (JM/MBA), finance (JM/MSF), management information systems (JM/MIS), and risk management and insurance (JM/RMI) in the near future.

The Florida Legislature and Governor Rick Scott recently approved a $5 million allocation for the construction of Legacy Hall. This is big news as it will allow us to move forward with selecting an architect and completing the formal design. The Campaign for Legacy Hall will be a major part of our fundraising efforts over the next several years.

We’ve rolled out a series of national, regional and local promotions about the College of Business. These messages tout our Top 20 program rankings in Real Estate (#11) and Risk Management/Insurance (#7), as well as the Top 20 rankings of our online MS-MIS and MS-RMI (#9), and Online MBA program (#16).

Events and Travel

The college has several events planned for the fall semester, and I will be traveling to meet with alumni and friends in several locations throughout the country:

 (Tentative Schedule)

  • July 26-29 - Alumni & Friends Event (Maggie Valley/Asheville, NC)
  • August 22 - Tampa Area Seminole Club/College of Business Joint Event (Tampa)
  • August 29-30 - Alumni & Friends Event (Fort Lauderdale)
  • Sept. 19 - Business Bash Event (Tallahassee)
  • Sept. 27-29 - Alumni & Friends Event (Charlotte, NC)
  • Oct. 19-20 - Real Estate Trends Conference (Tallahassee)
  • Oct. 23-26 - Alumni & Friends Event (Los Angeles, CA)
  • Nov. 2 - Leadership and Scholarship Dinner (Tallahassee)

I do hope you will find an opportunity to get involved with the college. There are so many ways to help us move farther down the Path to Preeminence. We refer to them as the Four T’s:

  • Time – Mentor a student or recent graduate, whether remotely or in your local area
  • Talent – Speak to classes and share your experiences; hire an intern; give a graduate a job
  • Treasure – Fund a scholarship; support student travel to engage with industry; fund a professorship; support Legacy Hall
  • Teamwork – Help us” stir the pot of alumni” by engaging with fellow Seminoles and getting them involved in our efforts

Thank you for your continuing support and encouragement. Enjoy the rest of summer!
