Message from Dean Michael Hartline - January 2018

Dec 13, 2017

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. A new year brings new energy and excitement for what lies ahead and, for your College of Business, a renewed commitment to continuing our journey on the Path to Preeminence. Buoyed by our recent rise in the U.S. News & World Report’s Best Undergraduate Business Programs rankings (No. 27 among public business schools), we continue to make strategic investments in our Four Ps of Preeminence:

PeopleOur most recent faculty hiring initiative is on track, and we have increased the funding for faculty summer support. A new student scholarship process and implementation timetable is in the works.

ProgramsThe new master’s in business analytics will launch this summer. Our internship program continues to grow – both with recruiting companies and participating students. Student organizations, such as the Case Competition Club, Consulting Group and Student Investment Fund, continue to perform at exceptional levels. Our corporate and student engagement programs continue to flourish.

Place The architectural firm to design Legacy Hall should be under contract within the next 30 days. Look for an announcement very soon.

Posture We continue to engage alumni and other key stakeholders to tell our story. A recent survey of our alumni will help us shape our message. Our college’s first economic impact study will be completed within the month.

Our 2018 Focus: Student Success

Looking ahead, a major focus during 2018 will be on improving the career readiness of our students and recent graduates. I am convinced this process begins when students arrive on campus as first semester freshmen. To date, our college has done very little to engage freshmen and sophomores (i.e., lower division students) to prepare them for the rigors of business school and life after college. As human and financial resources become available, we plan to establish programs that will enhance students’ communication skills, interviewing skills, analytical skills, resume preparation, exposure to executives and industry trends, mentoring and experiential learning (internships, competition teams, research projects, etc.).

With thousands of freshmen and sophomores to serve, this plan represents a pretty bold goal for our college. Online learning can help with this effort; however, nothing is more important than putting faculty and staff in place to ensure success. Our plan will also require significant support from alumni and friends, like you, who are willing to share your time and expertise with our students. If you are willing to help, we would love to talk with you!

The list is truly endless. All you really need is a passion for Florida State and the College of Business!
