Four management faculty members among most influential authors in their field

A recently published study of the most influential authors in organizational behavior and human resource management determined the work of four College of Business management professors are among the most cited. In fact, Gerald Ferris, Wayne Hochwarter, Pamela Perrewé and Chad Van Iddekinge placed in the top 0.6 percent of 16,289 authors included in the study and referenced in textbooks.

The study’s researchers looked at which authors are most frequently cited in peer-reviewed journals and business periodicals, journal articles, book chapters and in 38 widely used undergraduate textbooks for organizational behavior, human resource management, strategic management and general management. The study’s finding were published in an article titled, “A Pluralist Conceptualization of Scholarly Impact in Management Education: Students as Stakeholders,” which appears in the scholarly journal Academy of Management Learning & Education.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment, and we are proud to have four of the most cited authors on our faculty,” said College of Business Dean Michael Hartline. “Faculty members with published, cited research have an impact not only on their students, but also on society through innovation and discovery. Their important accomplishments also contribute to the college’s academic prominence, which greatly enhances our preeminence.”

Ferris is the Francis Eppes Professor of Management, a professor of psychology, a professor of sport management and author of numerous articles that appear in such publications as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Personnel Psychology, Academy of Management Journal and Academy of Management Review. His research interests are in the areas of social influence processes in human resources systems and the role of reputation in organizations


Hochwarter, the Jim Moran Professor of Management, has published more than 100 scientific and applied articles covering a wide range of topics including employee entitlement, worker engagement, job stress, layoffs, workplace politics, abusive work behaviors, personal accountability, optimism and leadership-focused motivation strategies. His work has appeared in such publications as Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Management, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and Journal of Applied Psychology.


Perrewé, the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor and Haywood and Betty Taylor Eminent Scholar of Business Administration, has published more than 40 books and book chapters and more than 135 articles in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Occupational Health Psychology and Personnel Psychology. Her research focuses on job stress, coping, organizational politics, emotion and social influence. 


Research by Van Iddekinge, the Bank of America Professor of Management, has appeared in top-tier journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management and Personnel Psychology. His research focuses on how organizations make staffing decisions and how those decisions affect job applicants and the quality and diversity of a firm's workforce. Van Iddekinge also was recently ranked No. 1 in the world for his prolific scholarship in human resource management in a recent article in the Journal of Applied Psychology
