Internship for Credit Program for RMI Major

The Internship for Credit program allows students to earn three course credits by combining practical industry-related work experience with academic requirements. Any student majoring in RMI that has completed nine credit hours of business/risk management courses (including RMI 3011 - Risk Management/Insurance) can participate. The course credits can be used as elective credits within the major and internships can be completed during any semester (fall, spring, or summer).

The process for participation in the Internship for Credit program:

  1. Register with the Career Center: Students must register with the Florida State University Career Center external link icon to participate. Students are also encouraged to have their resumes critiqued by the center.
  2. Obtain an internship: Students are required to obtain a position with an insurance company, consulting firm, financial services firm, insurance agency/brokerage or in a related area of a major corporation. The internship must include a minimum of 250 work hours, which must be completed during the specific semester for which the internship has been approved. Students can find their own opportunities as well as use the Career Center and department resources, including internship opportunities posted on the department’s website and from the department’s recruiting event, Insurance Days.
  3. Obtain approval of the company: Students should contact Lynne McChristian once an internship is obtained. The advisor will make a determination as to whether the internship is approved based on information provided by the company. Internship credit will not be granted retroactively, and the internship must be approved prior to the start of work.
  4. Complete the Internship Agreement Course Request and Agreement Form: Students will be provided with this form once their internships have been approved.
  5. Register for the class: Once the internship course request and agreement form has been completed, students will be enrolled in RMI 4941 - Risk Managment Internship, which is a three credit course. All work and academic requirements must be completed during the semester in which the student is enrolled in the internship course. Termination of the internship without prior approval from the student’s faculty advisor will result in an unsatisfactory grade in the course.

While the student will be provided with a syllabus by the instructor of record for the course, the student’s grade will be determined based on the following course requirements: (1) employer mid-internship evaluation; (2) employer final internship evaluation; (3) weekly journals; (4) one-page summary of the internship experience; (5) student evaluation form; and (6) paper on a topic approved by the instructor of record.
