FSU Graduate Receives Support From Jim Moran Scholar

May 04, 2018

Margarette Swift, a 23-year old student at Florida State University, will receive her bachelor’s degree in social work today during one of the University’s four commencement ceremonies.

Her journey to receiving her degree is one of perseverance as she was abused, abandoned and then adopted before having a chance to earn an education at FSU.

Swift credits the support and guidance she received from Jim Moran Scholar Tadarryl Starke, who directs the CARE program at FSU, as playing a big role in her success over the last few years.

“Margarette is an inspiration for her resiliency and strength,” Starke said in a quote given to the Tallahassee Democrat. “Despite everything she’s gone through, her selfless spirit, determination to success, and passion for helping others shines through. She’s been such an amazing student and tremendous person that I’ve had the pleasure to watch grow into an impactful leader.”

About the Jim Moran Scholars
The Jim Moran Foundation, in partnership with FSU, annually recognizes two Jim Moran Scholars – one from North Florida and one from South Florida. These scholars are selected from African-American high school seniors, who are role models, received admission to FSU and have been identified with a financial barrier. The scholars receive a four year, needs-based scholarship with funding provided through the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship.
