New student engagement coordinator on board

Marissa MainwoodThe College of Business welcomes Marissa Mainwood as student engagement coordinator, a newly created position designed to increase student participation in college and campus-wide programs that strengthen leadership skills and enhance career prospects.  

With an enrollment of 6,360 undergraduate and graduate students – making it one of the largest business schools in the nation – the college wants to ensure all students are taking advantage of the numerous opportunities available to them at Florida State University, including professional development workshops, industry immersions, case competitions, internship and job-placement services, alumni mentorships and networking opportunities.

Mainwood, who reports to Marissa Langston, assistant dean for alumni and community engagement, comes to the college from Tallahassee Community College (TCC), where she most recently served as a data analyst and special projects coordinator overseeing TCC Leadership Institute programming. She earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Florida Atlantic University and her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida State.

“While academics are a priority, we view activities to learn leadership and soft skills as essential to producing well-rounded graduates grounded in their various fields and prepared to thrive in their careers,” Langston said. “With Marissa’s hiring, we have a great opportunity to expand and strengthen our efforts.”

Mainwood will work toward increased student involvement in student networking and engagement offerings, such as the Local Business Shadowing Program, Lunch with a Rotarian Program, the Professional Mentorship Program, the MBA Shadow Program and ’Noles on Wall Street, among others. Encouraging participation in college’s 30 clubs and organizations through which students can hone their specific industry skills and build networks also is on Mainwood’s agenda.

Additionally, Mainwood will assist in the development and promotion of diversity and inclusion activities within the college These events, including specific days focused on leadership and diversity, will give students the opportunity to explore these complex issues before entering the workforce.

Mainwood also is charged with encouraging a culture of giving among students, preparing them to give back to the college as they advance in their careers.
