MARCH 2018

2018 Great Give to benefit student organizations

Great Give 2018The College of Business’ student organizations through its Presidents Council will be the beneficiary of Florida State University’s next Great Give, a 36-hour, campuswide, online-only fundraising campaign.

Business students, alumni, the faculty, staff members and friends can help the council reach its $3,000 goal by making a pledge online between 9 a.m. Thursday, March 22, and 9 p.m. on Friday, March 23. Funds raised will ultimately benefit undergraduate student organization activities promoting leadership and networking activities. Dean Michael Hartline has issued a challenge to students, offering to match their total donations up to $1,000.

“All of us involved in the Presidents Council are grateful to the donors who are helping the group carry out its important mission to students,” said Marissa Mainwood, student engagement coordinator and the organization’s adviser. “Council members are gaining leadership experience and confidence that they can carry into their future careers.”

Comprising leaders from each of the college’s student organizations, the Presidents Council is responsible for disseminating information to members of the college’s 30-plus student groups. Funds raised through the 2018 Great Give will be distributed to support programs that promote leadership and networking activities, which have included:

  • Women in Leadership Conference – The college’s Women in Business organization co-hosts this annual conference featuring women industry leaders that regularly draws more than 400 students. Events of this magnitude require financial support for promotional materials, programs and refreshments.
  • Faculty and Student Mixers – Each semester, the College of Business Student Leadership Council sponsors social events that allow students to network with faculty members outside of the classroom. Donor support helps cover the cost of these events.
  • GIS Leadership Symposium – Each year, members of Gamma Iota Sigma, a business fraternity, attend the national GIS Leadership Symposium, where they learn how to lead a successful student organization and network with peers from chapters from around the nation. Members of other organizations also attend conferences to learn leadership skills that benefit their own groups. Donor support helps cover the cost of conference registration, travel and hotel.
  • Industry Networking Events – Student organizations frequently invite industry executives to campus to share information about internships and full-time employment opportunities. Often, these events include an informal networking reception for students and executives. Donor support covers the cost of promoting these events to students, producing a resume book for each executive and holding the receptions.
