Management graduate is Distinguished Doctoral Alumni Award recipient

Since graduating from Florida State University in 1995 with her doctoral degree, Dawn Carlson has earned widespread acclaim for her important contributions to research on workplace-family issues and as a prolific publisher whose work appears in the top journals in her field.

In recognition of her many accomplishments, the College of Business last month presented Carlson with its 2018 Distinguished Doctoral Alumni Award. The award recognizes doctoral graduates for distinction in their areas of expertise.

Carlson, the H.R. Gibson Chair in Organizational Development in the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University, earned her doctorate in business administration, majoring in organizational behavior and human resources. Her research focuses on work-family balance and other workplace issues, such as abusive bosses and working mothers. It appears in such journals as Personnel Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Journal of Applied Psychology. She is co-author of a book titled “Beyond Juggling: Rebalancing Your Busy Life.”

“FSU was very supportive and encouraging to me and did a great job teaching me how to research and how to teach,” said Carlson who has remained in touch with many of her FSU professors, including Pamela Perrewé, this year’s Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor and the Haywood and Betty Taylor Eminent Scholar of Business Administration.

“Dawn is an example of what all young people should want to be,” said Perrewé, who has collaborated with Carlson on research and publishing. “Her citation count is at 14,000, and she has received countless awards for her teaching and research and is involved in service to her university and to her community.”

Counted among her professional recognitions are Baylor’s Outstanding Professor in Scholarship Award and the Distinguished Professor Award, as well as two of the university’s outstanding research awards. In 2007, she was a finalist for the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research.

Before entering FSU’s doctoral program, Carlson earned her bachelor’s degree and a Master of Business (MBA) from Baylor. After graduating from Florida State, she and her husband, John, who earned his Ph.D. in management information systems from FSU, taught for four years at the University of Utah before heading to Baylor.

“Our alumni reflect the high quality of education they received at the College of Business, and we are very proud of their remarkable professional and personal success,” said Michael Hartline, dean of the College of Business. “We are thrilled to count Dr. Carlson among the best of the best of our alumni, and we are incredibly proud of her accomplishments.”
