Considered a visionary in information technology in auditing and accounting, Dr. Bill Hillison profoundly impacted his students and built a national reputation for research productivity and teaching excellence during his tenure in the Department of Accounting. He began at FSU as an assistant professor in 1977 and retired as the Arthur Andersen Professor of Accounting in 2009.
Dr. Hillison's ongoing relationship with the accounting practitioner community led to FSU's increased visibility and helped establish its outstanding reputation. Under his leadership, the Master of Accounting program more than doubled in enrollment. During his university career, he authored more than 70 pieces for top academic and practitioner publications and continues to co-author two Uniform CPA Examination preparation books for Gleim Publications that have assisted several generations of students in earning their CPA licenses nationwide.
His mark on generations of FSU graduates and the accounting profession is reflected in the numerous awards he has received over the years, including the Joan H. Raley Faculty Service Award and the FICPA Educator of the Year. Out of gratitude, several former students established the fully endowed William Hillison Professorship.
Throughout his career, Dr. Hillison has been committed to educating not only students, but also working professionals. He has presented workshops, CPA Auditing Review courses and numerous training programs. He served as a liaison to the FICPA-FSU Accounting Conferences for more than 20 years, actively recruiting speakers, developing programs and presenting at the conference. In addition to his industry service, for years Dr. Hillison has co-directed the Bowlegs Run for Scholarship, which has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the FSU Faculty and Friends Scholarship Fund.
Dr. Hillison received his bachelor's degree and a Master of Science in Business Administration from Northern Illinois University and his Ph.D. in accounting with a minor in computer and information sciences from the University of Florida.
