Emily Wegman (RMI ’17) entered college without a chosen career in mind. “I knew I wanted to major in something I was interested in, that would allow me to use my love for communication and, at the end of the day, would prepare me for a secure job,” she said. She landed on an RMI major after talking with fellow students and attending RMI events. She went on to serve as president of Gamma Iota Sigma, the international professional insurance fraternity, her senior year and actively participate in the college’s RMI opportunities.
Attending industry conferences as an RMI student connected Wegman with RMI students and professionals from FSU and across the country. “They helped us to grow our knowledge and networking base, allowed us to spend time with recruiters and other industry professionals, and provided time for fun and to explore new cities,” Wegman said.
After graduation, Wegman returned to her hometown of Palm Beach Gardens after being invited to participate in AmWINS’ first Producer Development Program. Over the course of more than two years, she received training in sales, underwriting and management, culminating with a new post leading her own team this past January.
Wegman’s advice to current students: “Attend every event you can. The college and RMI major offer incredible opportunities to grow your brand and solidify yourself as a prime candidate for a job come graduation.” She also encourages students to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain course waivers or credit for multiple insurance designations. She also recommends to graduates to stay involved with the RMI program. “It is important now, more than ever, to make and retain important connections.”
