Mikael A. Johnson is a Senior Lead Partner in the Asset Management Practice of KPMG. Based in New York City, Mikael serves as the lead partner on several of the Firm’s leading asset management clients, and he provides advisory and audit services for major institutional investor clients (including endowments, foundations, and pension funds). One of the originators of KPMG’s Alternative Investments Practice in the late 1990’s, Mikael has served on the Global and US Investment Management leadership teams as Global and US Lead Partner for Alternative Investments, leading the creation and expansion of the global network of KPMG professionals focused on alternative investments.

In addition, Mikael is one of the originators of the Digital Assets team in the United States where he currently serves as the Co-Lead Partner for Digital Assets.

Mikael has 33 years of experience serving clients including hedge funds, managed account platforms, commodity pools, private equity and venture capital funds, infrastructure funds, native crypto funds, funds of funds, hybrid products and their sponsors.

Mikael regularly speaks at industry forums on topics related to alternative investments and digital assets. He has authored publications and been quoted in periodicals and news outlets, including co-authoring a joint KPMG/CREATE study of the hedge funds industry entitled, “Hedge Funds: A Catalyst Re-Shaping Global Investment,” and a KPMG white paper entitled, “Accessing hedge funds through managed accounts: The future is now.”

From 2013-2016, Mikael served on the Board of Directors of the Managed Funds Association, and he is currently a member of the Digital Assets Working Group of the Alternative Investments Management Association. In 2008, he was named to the Crain’s New York Business Magazine’s “Top 40 Under 40” New York business leaders. In addition, he is passionately committed to the prevention and treatment of child abuse, serving on the Global Board of the charitable organization, Help for Children.

Mikael earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting, cum laude, at Florida State in 1991, where he was a proud member of the Marching Chiefs and Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In addition, in 1992 he earned a Master of Science in Accounting at the University of Virginia.

Mikael is active in youth development organizations, including serving on the Board of Advisors of the non-profit Jersey City (NJ) Capitals Youth Hockey Association, where he is also a USA Hockey certified ice hockey coach.
