George Scribano realized that medicine was not his true passion after completing science courses his freshman year. While he wanted to help people, he wanted to do it in a way that allowed him to leverage his own strengths.

“Becoming a business major was a huge shift for me,” says Scribano. “The RMI major presented the perfect option.” From that point on, Scribano has immersed himself in numerous experiential and networking opportunities offered through the RMI program and College of Business. He got involved with Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) and attended the Wholesale & Specialty Insurance Association (WSIA) Surplus Lines Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia. He also attended several other industry and academic conferences, including the Global RIMS Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, and the GIS President’s Conference in Columbus, Ohio.

While at the Global RIMS Conference, Scribano competed in the Spencer-RIMS Risk Management Challenge. He credits this hands-on experience for confirming his passion for the insurance industry and pushing him to take a leading role within GIS. He became vice president of Finance of the student organization and now serves as president.

Within the College of Business, Scribano also honed his critical-thinking skills as a member of the International Case Competition Team. His four-person team took first place at the 2018 UConn International Business Case Challenge at the University of Connecticut. He also participated as a team member for the University of Washington’s Global Business Case Competition, competing against 16 other university teams – mostly from Asia and Europe. This past summer, he interned within the retail production side of insurance at Arthur J. Gallagher.

“The RMI program and GIS have given me a network of insurance industry leaders, potential career opportunities, and unimaginable growth and advice in an industry difficult to conquer,” Scribano said. “I have had the opportunity to travel, represent FSU on a national stage and meet other insurance peers from a multitude of other universities.”

As graduation approaches this May, Scribano is working to understand where he best fits in the industry. He said he is excited about the opportunities ahead and feels that FSU has provided him with the opportunity “to develop a foundation for conquering the insurance world.”
