I assist in navigating the financial crime compliance subdivision within Deloitte Ltd.’s Financial Advisory Department. Offering professional and specialized advising to Bermuda-based companies, as well as international clients on anti-money-laundering/anti-terrorist financing, sanctions, and other compliance requirements and regulations. I also manage and conduct client analyses and controls testing, along with subsequent remediation for regulated financial institutions.
Insurance and reinsurance are major industries in Bermuda and offer a significant majority of the island’s professional services. This, and my desire to gain a more detailed understanding of the sector, had a significant influence on my decision towards the MS-RMI program.
How did your graduate education help shape your professional experiences? FSU’s RMI program has further opened my eyes to such an impactful industry. It has increased my knowledge to its many facets and exposed further connections to much of the work I am exposed to daily. I have also gained a significant amount of confidence as a result of completing such a well-measured program.
How has working in your industry changed the way you look at the world? In working in the financial services industry, specifically FCC, many of its aspects have had a hand in molding my outlook of the world. Most specifically, I would certainly attribute my increased attention and caution towards maintaining compliance and encouraging a fundamental understanding of the “dos and don'ts” of an institution or position to my industry.
In being completely transparent here, I do struggle with maintaining a balanced work-life equilibrium at times. Especially during these COVID-19 impacted times where work has become one of the best distractions for so much of what is going on. However, I am actively working on identifying when I have been on a heavy work streak and start to feel a bit mentally drained in order to recognize when I need to take a minute to myself and slow the pace.
What would someone be surprised to learn about you? Early on, I had thought my academic path would lead me into a career that involved forensic pathology. However, before my General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams, I quickly realized that my strength was not at all in chemistry, and I decided I would leave it to those much better versed and gifted in the area.
Not too sure if this is just a Bermuda or island thing, and it may sound weird, but my go-to office snack is vegetable yeast, salted popcorn.
“It is okay not to finish it all in one go, the work will still be there tomorrow.”
What is one characteristic your co-workers dig about you and one that drives them crazy about you? I am absolutely anyone and everyone’s biggest cheerleader and supporter on any given day, no matter the nature or size of their task ahead. I like to think it gives that little bit of extra confidence that we could all use sometimes…but, that also involves me encouraging the “bad” habits, as well when it comes to healthy eating. I mainly encouraging balance instead of restricted régimes and sometimes just giving the external “go ahead” to grab a cupcake on a Friday rather than the “healthier” snack option.
If someone asked you to teach for an hour about any topic at a moment’s notice, what would you choose? I would absolutely opt to discuss the topic of sustainability and the impact we can have as individuals on climate change.
