Dr. Kathleen McCullough is the Kathryn Magee Kip Professor of Risk Management and Insurance in the Department of Risk Management, Insurance, Real Estate, and Legal Studies at Florida State University’s College of Business. She also is Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Business. In her position as associate dean, she oversees academic strategy, academic policy and research programs. This includes oversight of all academic programs and interfacing with university-level administration on these issues. 

McCullough was identified as the No. 1 researcher in the leading risk-management journals in the most recent 10 years in a study by Morris G Danielson and Jean L. Heck of Saint Joseph’s University. She is the recipient of the 2011 Developing Scholars Award from Florida State and the 2010 ARIA Early Career Award. Her work has been published in several journals, including the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the North American Actuarial Journal, the Journal of Banking and Finance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, Journal of Insurance Issues, Journal of Insurance Regulation, the CPCU eJournal and Best's Review. She is the co-editor of the Journal of Insurance Regulation and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Insurance Issues. McCullough has won research grants and awards from the Journal of Insurance Regulation, the State Farm Companies Foundation, the Risk Management and Insurance Society, the PLUS Foundation and the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, as well as Florida State and the State of Florida. 

She teaches in the undergraduate, online master’s and doctoral programs, and she has coordinated the online master’s program in risk management and insurance. Her courses include principles of risk management and insurance and commercial risk management. She was the recipient of the 2005 Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award from the American Risk and Insurance Program for her work on risk management case projects with Dr. Robert E. Hoyt and Dr. Randy E. Dumm. McCullough has received instructional grants from both Florida State University and the State Farm Insurance Companies. 

McCullough is a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association, Southern Risk and Insurance Association, Western Risk and Insurance Association and the Risk Management Research Council. She is also a past president of the Southern Risk and Insurance Association. 

Prior to working at Florida State University, she was an assistant professor at Illinois State University in the Katie Insurance School. Her industry experience includes working for Sedgwick James of Texas. 

McCullough received her bachelor’s degree in finance/risk management from St. Mary’s University. Her Ph.D. with a major in risk management and insurance and minor in finance is from the University of Georgia.

Interesting Facts

Dr. McCullough is originally from Texas. Before starting graduate school she worked for an insurance broker in the Dallas area.
