1. What are your primary responsibilities?
My role at BroadStreet Partners is to source new core partners and support existing core partners in an effort to execute acquisitions. I do everything from screening prospective targets to valuation and contract negotiations.
BroadStreet Partners makes majority investments in high-performing independent insurance agencies, using direct equity ownership in a framework that closely aligns our interests with those of our core partners.
In addition to traditional mergers and acquisitions activity, I am engaged in myriad initiatives aimed at helping our partner agencies improve their organizations. While we are not an operating partner, we are always looking for ways to support their performance and strategic objectives by leveraging carriers, facilitating knowledge sharing among the group and providing production support, to name a few.
2. Why did you choose the online Master of Science in Risk Management and Insurance (MS-RMI) Program at FSU?
My first job after graduation was as a producer. As a young producer, my initial feeling was that I would take any edge I could get. While you cannot manufacture years of experience, you can become an expert in your field by devoting more time and energy into learning your craft than your peers do. I quickly earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation and decided that Florida State’s Online Master’s Program in Risk Management/Insurance (MS-RMI) was the best way to continue my career path.
Ultimately, there was never any question as to whether I would continue my education. As an undergraduate, I experienced the benefits of the RMI program and faculty at Florida State first hand. When it came time to choose a master’s degree program, it was an easy decision.
3. How has the MS-RMI degree helped you in your current position and in achieving your career goals?
Prior to enrolling in Florida State’s MS-RMI program, I determined the insurance industry was where I would devote my career and that higher education in the field would be a big differentiator.
After completing the program, my career took a major turn and there is no doubt that the MS-RMI played a big role in that. Immediately after earning my master’s degree, I joined a Fortune 100 insurance carrier, where I spent a few years in the Mergers & Acquisitions group. After that, I did a stint in the investment banking division of an insurance M&A advisory firm before transitioning into my current role.
The MS-RMI offers a holistic curriculum that enables you to gain an understanding of every facet of the industry and an appreciation for it. The program dives deep into the process/purpose of risk transfer, distribution networks, global risk management, insurance accounting and finance, and everything in between. That is invaluable for those looking to excel in this industry.
As a result, I have always been comfortable engaging regardless of the role and topic, which is good considering I have experienced virtually every aspect of the insurance value chain professionally (and personally, since we’re all naturally consumers in some way).
4. How have you stayed connected to FSU and/or the RMI Program?
When I first graduated, I participated in the College of Business’ Professional Mentorship Program, where I was able to work with a number of students. Since that time, my career has taken me farther and farther from Tallahassee, which has made things more difficult; however, I have always been a strong advocate for the program and worked to bring Florida State graduates into the organizations at which I have worked. I welcome any opportunity to help in the future if there is a way to pay it forward and certainly welcome engagement from students!
