In our Master of Science in Finance (MSF) program, students develop and expand their understanding of concepts and analytical tools, including financial modeling, used for business decision-making. MSF students benefit from hands-on experience managing an investment fund of more than $5 million. The program also boasts a state-of-the art trading room, equipped with presentation and financial data displays, Bloomberg terminals, FactSet workstations, an eight-zone world clock, touch-screen computers and scrolling stock tickers, replicating real-life trading rooms.
Over the course of a year on campus, students improve their overall quantitative, communication and presentation skills, develop proficiency at interpreting statistical evidence in an economically meaningful way, learn to work effectively in team settings and make considerable progress toward the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA) or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst™ (CAIA) certifications. The program provides an outstanding career placement rate and networking opportunities with alumni serving in posts ranging from Florida’s most innovative corporations to Wall Street’s strongest financial firms.
MSF students may follow one of two program tracks: MSF Corporate Finance and Investment Management Specialization or the MSF Real Estate Specialization. The MSF qualifies as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degree, assuring graduates of employer demand and allowing eligible graduates on student visas to extend their U.S. work stay up to two years longer. Highly qualified FSU undergraduates majoring in finance or real estate can get a jumpstart on MSF coursework by applying for a combined pathway that double counts up to nine credit hours toward both bachelor’s and master’s degree requirements.
Students admitted to the MSF program start their studies with two courses offered summer session B, which typically begins in late June. The first course, required for all students, is Financial Modeling for Investment Banking and Corporate Finance and is a fully virtual, asynchronous course. There is not a set class time, and students complete required coursework on their preferred schedule each week. The second course is Ethics in Investment Management, an in-person course. However, students can opt to replace the ethics course with an academic credit for a secured internship if it is completed over the summer term and meets the criteria of the college and university. Approval for this internship must be granted by June 1.
Admission Guidelines
Admission to the Master of Science in Finance program is highly competitive. The decision is based on a portfolio of qualifications, including prior academic experience, work experience, optional entrance exam scores (such as GMAT or GRE) and letters of recommendation. Entrance exam scores are optional for this program and can be submitted if they will enhance an application. Any submitted test scores become part of the application and are used in the admission decision.
Degree Requirements
Prerequisites
All applicants must complete the following four business foundation courses prior to enrollment in the MSF program:
- Financial Accounting (ACG 2021 or its equivalent)
- Financial Management (FIN 3403 or its equivalent; minimum grade of B- required)
- Investments (FIN 4504 or its equivalent)
- Problems in Financial Management (FIN 4424 or its equivalent)
The MSF program is intended primarily for students who have completed an undergraduate finance degree prior to entering the program. Students with undergraduate degrees in related areas such as mathematics, statistics, accounting, economics, actuarial science and other business disciplines will be considered for admission upon demonstrating a high level of competency in both their chosen field of study and in the prerequisites required for admission. A completed internship is strongly encouraged for all without prior business experience.
Any exception to the specified minimums must be approved by the MSF program director. Specific requests for exceptions or substitutions must be submitted in writing to the College of Business Graduate Programs Office.
Program of Study
The MSF offers a three-semester lock-step program consisting of 32 credit hours: 10 courses (three credit hours each) plus a professional development course in the fall and a final program assessment in the spring (one credit hour each). Each year, the program starts in summer (late June) with two courses. This summer semester is accelerated and offers a fully online option allowing students to replace one of the required courses with an approved internship. In both the fall and spring semesters, students will take four in-person courses each across a variety of different finance fields.
Students will also manage the Student Investment Fund (SIF), which includes over $5 million in assets under management (AUM). Each year, a select group of students will be offered a position of Portfolio Manager (PM). There are a limited number of PM roles available. Selection will be based on an objective assessment given to admitted students prior to the start of the program. Any student not selected for the role of PM, will take on the role of Portfolio Analyst. Being admitted to the MSF program does not guarantee a PM position or the course schedule offered to the PMs.
STEM designation
The MSF qualifies as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degree, assuring graduates of employer demand and allowing eligible graduates on student visas to extend their U.S. work stay up to two years longer.
